Maine Home+Design: Drink and Sketch

This autumn, Taylor Massey attended a fun 'Drink + Sketch' event hosted by Maine Home+Design magazine. We were excited to hear that the magazine decided to feature our sketches in their November issue! Check out the full feature here:

The prompts called on architects to sketch one of seven prompts on a cocktail napkin (not the ideal paper type for a felt tipped pen!) With a local beer in hand, the prompts I chose to capture were: a mini coastal library, a cliff side sauna, and a floating tiki bar. I think you can see my personal experiences and values shine through these sketches.

My mini coastal library literally only reveals itself when the wind blows sand in the correct direction, an ode to the ultimate coastal vernacular and connection to nature.
My cliff side sauna is embedded within the rock face, making it only accessible to those who are willing to climb to it.
My tiki bar reflects the floating huts we used to lounge at at Huai Tueng Thao lake in northern Thailand. When you rented one of these lakeside huts, one typically ended up half in and half out of the water like a poolside bar.

Overall, this event and the fun sketches it produced were a welcomed change to the day to day grind of running an architectural practice. As I said in my quote for the magazine, “What makes a great architect is not the ability to sketch buildings, draw floor plans, or even draft complex details. What makes a great architect is their ability to see the world through a lens toward optimism. Every challenge is an opportunity, and every problem is an invitation for improvement. This Drink + Sketch event exemplified that optimism and allowed us all to reflect on why we love this profession.”

Thanks to Maine Home+Design for hosting such a fantastic event!
